Description

The Ocean Collection is a reimagined table-and-chair collection (originally designed in 1955) in ocean waste plastic, combining innovative solutions to prevent pollution of the world’s oceans - with one of the 20th century’s most renowned designers, Nanna Ditzel. The series is characterized by its light structure with repeated slats and metal frames, made and tested for outdoor use.

The ocean waste plastic and recycled plastic (PP) honors the UN Sustainable Development Goals of protecting “Life Below Water” (SDGs 14) and “Responsible Consumption and Production” (SDGs 12) and “Partnership for the Goals” (SDGs 17).

The Ocean Collection is designed for disassembly, meaning that the design allows each component in its purest form to recycle into new production circles.

Ocean Collection by Joergen & Nanna Ditzel

The Ocean Collection originally designed in 1955 by some of the 20th century's most renowned designers, Joergen and Nanna Ditzel. The design has now been created in ocean plastic waste. The series is characterized by its light structure with repeated slats and metal frames, made and tested for outdoor use. The Ocean collection is designed for disassembly, meaning that the design allows each component in its purest form to upcycle into new production circles.

Joergen & Nanna Ditzel

Nanna og Joergen Ditzel were born in 1923 and 1921. They met each other at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where they both studied.

In 1946 they established their own design studio. The period from 1946 to 1961 was very productive for the young couple. After Joergens death in 1961 Nanna continued their joint project alone. Many new things were designed the following years, until her death in 2005.

In our search for a design that could fit this pioneering sustainable production method, we partnered with Dennie Ditzel, manager of the design legacy after the late Joergen and Nanna Ditzel. Together we screened the archives for designs that could be ideal for this new material and production method of using fishnets and other ocean plastic waste, resulting in an outdoor collection we named “Ocean” and now "OC2".

It all began with fishing nets

In a nod to its materiality, the Ocean collection is largely made from ocean plastic waste, one of the most important issues facing our planet. A new innovative business model motivates fishermen across the world to dispose of their discarded fishing nets. One Ocean chair uses 960g of ocean plastic waste.

The classic Ocean Collection comes in two variants. Both are made of upcycled fishing nets and upcycled hard plastic with a steelframe of hard gunmetal. One Ocean Bench safes the ocean of 3.2 kg. plastic waste. Explore the Ocean Collection in Sand and Beige below.

Ocean OC2 Collection

The Ocean OC2 Collection is Mater's newest reinterpretation of the Ocean Collection, with slats made from plastic beer kegs, from one of the leading breweries in the world, DanishCarlsberg. When the beer kegs are emptied after use, they get deflated, granulated and cast into the characteristic green coloured slats of the Ocean OC2 Collection.
